How can I find the appropriate translation?
When you look up a word, you will often get multiple translations for its various senses. Before selecting the translation that best suits your context, you may wish to view the usage examples, i.e. sentences and text fragments that contain your search term and its translations.
With the Translations tab selected, click on a word in the entry to view the example sentences.

The example sentences may also provide some additional information about how the translation equivalents are used. For example, you may see what prepositions are typically used with a certain verb or noun.
For some language combinations, there may be no usage examples. If this is the case, try the Phrases tab, where you may find a set phrase or word combination for your query.
How can I view usage examples for a specific translation?
Use the "Advanced search" feature:
ABBYY Lingvo.Pro will retrieve all the sentences where the original word is translated as you have specified in the bottom field. Both the original word and its translation will be highlighted.

How can I find examples only for a word that starts with an upper-case (or lower-case) letter? Are searches case-sensitive?
To do a case-sensitive search:
Let us take German as an example. All nouns in this language are capitalized, while verbs are not, so, for instance, Essen, is a noun and translates as food and essen is a verb and translates as to eat. Now if you type essen and select the Match case option, you will find example sentences only for the verb.
Can I translate entire sentences?
ABBYY Lingvo.Pro may help you get a general idea what a sentence or a long phrase is about. With the Translations tab selected, type your sentence or long phrase into the search field, click Search, and you will get translations for each of the words.
I cannot find a translation. Is there anything I can do?
Try the following:
Note: If cannot find a translation for a certain word, this does not necessarily mean that the word does not exist. This may be a very rare or specialist term that has not yet made it into the ABBYY Lingvo dictionaries. Please use the feedback form to let us know, or add the missing word into the dictionary yourself.
I want more translations than are available in the free dictionaries. How can I access the content of the locked dictionaries?

Once you activate your ABBYY Lingvo x5 licence, you will also be able to access the purchased dictionaries online at ABBYY Lingvo.Pro.
Why are there no translations for some language pairs?
Unfortunately, no dictionaries are currently available for some language combinations. Please refer to the All dictionaries page for the complete list of available dictionaries and their descriptions.
If you know the right translation for a word, you can add this translation into the dictionary.
How can type in characters that are not available on my keyboard?
Use the virtual keyboard. Click the

on ABBYY Lingvo.Pro.
Note: The virtual keyboard does not support Chinese characters.
The layouts of the virtual keyboard are almost identical to the layouts of the corresponding physical keyboards.
